Rev. Dr. Eboni Marshall Turman to Give 2018 Commencement Address

McCormick Theological Seminary announces that scholar, preacher, and activist, the Rev. Dr. Eboni Marshall Turman will give the 2018 Commencement address for McCormick.

The Rev. Dr. Eboni Marshall Turman is the Assistant Professor of Theology and African American Religion at the Yale University Divinity School. Said President David H. Crawford, “It is with great joy and gratitude that I share the news Dr. Turman has accepted our invitation.”

Before her appointment at Yale, Dr. Turman was Assistant Research Professor of Theological Ethics, Black Church Studies, and African & African American Studies and Director of the Office of Black Church Studies at Duke University Divinity School.

Dr. Turman is a leading voice in national discussions of faith, race and gender. A first-career concert dancer and ordained National Baptist preacher, her research interests span the varieties of 20th century US theological liberalisms, most especially Black and womanist theological, social ethical, and theo-aesthetic traditions. A rare scholarly millennial voice, Dr. Turman’s body of work offers a much-needed moral and womanist perspective on issues facing the Black community and the country.

A pioneer and trailblazer in line with McCormick’s own history, Dr. Turman has earned extraordinary distinctions in the church and academy. Dr. Turman was the youngest woman to be named Assistant Minister of the historic Abyssinian Baptist Church in New York City; she is the only womanist theological ethicist on faculty at Yale University Divinity School. Dr. Turman’s opinions have been published by the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, the Huffington Post, and Dallas Morning News among others. Dr. Turman is the author of Toward a Womanist Ethic of Incarnation: Black Bodies, the Black Church, and the Council of Chalcedon.

Associate Professor of Christian Ethics, Dr. Reggie Williams said, “I am excited and delighted that my good friend and colleague is returning to McCormick this spring to deliver the 2018 Commencement address. In a world searching for a better way forward, Rev. Dr. Eboni Marshall Turman is someone who can help lead us.”

McCormick’s 2018 Commencement ceremony is Saturday, May 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. and will be held at St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, located at 5472 S Kimbark Ave in Chicago, IL .
